It’s great to be a Gator”, sums up my two years at Fort Dorchester Elementary School. The 2007-2008 school year concludes my 28th year in Education and 26th year in Dorchester 2. My past educational experiences include teaching English and French on the high school level, 10 years as a first grade teacher and 16 years as an assistant principal. As a child, I spent many summer days and hours after school helping my mother, a kindergarten and special needs teacher, with preparations for her students. My senior English and French Teachers encouraged me to choose a career in Education. After college, I began my teaching career in Charleston County before moving to Florence, SC. with my husband. In Florence, I also taught high school and began a nine year sabbatical as a stay at home mom with my two sons. In 1977, we returned to Summerville settling in Kings Grant. My neighbor, Dr. Joan Jones, an early childhood professor at the College of Charleston encouraged me to pursue a Masters Degree in Early Childhood while staying home with John and Jared. I returned to the classroom when my youngest son began preschool. Both of my sons are graduates of DD2 schools, John from Summerville and Jared from Fort Dorchester. I am proud of the education they received which enabled them to attend and graduate from Clemson and Jacksonville University in Florida. Now they are the parents of my four grandchildren, Julia Kate, Carlton, Natalya, and Isabella. I have served as a teacher at Knightsville Elementary, Oakbrook Elementary, and as Assistant Principal at Beech Hill, Dubose Middle School and Rollings Elementary. After returning from nine years in the middle school, I realized the tremendous leaps our children have made using the Literacy model. It is so exciting to see them reading when they have a spare moment. I look forward to the math initiatives planned for the 2008-2009 school year. Fort Dorchester is a wonderful community, thanks especially to a committed faculty and staff. The positive atmosphere, safe environment and involved parents stand out to any newcomer. Thanks for all you do as parents to support the mission of our school. There are many of you whom I have not met, please stop and introduce yourself. I would love to meet everyone.
