Safety Requirement - Effective Immediately

Good evening DD2 Families and Staff,

Effective immediately, students are not permitted to operate motorized bicycles, scooters, or similar motorized devices on school property, regardless of whether the device is powered by gasoline or electricity. This restriction is not applicable to any mobility aids which are provided for in a student's IEP or 504 plan.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Gas-powered motorized bicycles or scooters
  • Electric scooters
  • Electric bicycles/e-bikes
  • Mopeds
  • Motorized personal transportation devices
  • Other similar gas- or electric-powered transportation devices*

If a student brings a gas- or electric-powered transportation device to school, the expectation is that the student will:

  • Transition to walking at a safe and appropriate location before entering school property
  • Walk the gas- or electric-powered transportation device while on school property where required by campus procedures
  • Walk the gas- or electric-powered transportation device through all designated crosswalks. As a reminder, traditional bicycles and scooters should also be walked through a crosswalk.
  • Yield to pedestrians and follow all posted traffic and pedestrian-control devices/signage
  • Not operate a motorized bicycle, scooter, moped, or similar motorized device on school property
  • Be informed about this new requirement and consequences related to any violations against the school’s student conduct procedures

This requirement is being implemented as a district safety measure to reduce the potential for collisions involving students, pedestrians, vehicles, buses, and bicycles or scooters. School arrival and dismissal areas can become extremely congested, and requiring students to walk these devices through crosswalks creates a more predictable and controlled movement pattern.

Our goal is simple: keep students and pedestrians moving safely and predictably around our campuses.

Thank you for your continued assistance in maintaining a safe environment for our students, staff, and visitors.
